Man’s Greatest Need

1 ¶ Of David. A maskil. ("to give instruction.")  Blessed (plural) is he whose transgressions are forgiven (to carry out of sight), whose sins are covered. 2 Blessed is the man whose sin(iniquity) the LORD does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit. 3 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Selah (meditate) 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD" --and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah (meditate)

6 Therefore let everyone who is godly pray to you while you may be found; surely when the mighty waters rise, they will not reach him.

7 ¶ You are my hiding-place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah (meditate)

8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you. 9 Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.

10 Many are the woes of the wicked, but the LORD's unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in him.

11 Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart! PSALM 32: 1-11 (NIV)

1-     We certainly must see this Psalm in the context of David’s life story.

2-     Special Psalm - Its theme is universal. It is about the greatest need of man, true forgiveness from the debt of his sin.

3-     Here David teaches doctrine by example.  (like Samaritan Woman, Peter, Paul!!!!)  US????

4-     Some scholars believe this Psalm was written to be sung on Atonement Day.

1- The "Blessed" Man.  (1-2)

It is clear from the text that a man may know that he is pardoned. [How can the unknown be a blessing?]

Exodus 34:6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation. (NIV) [Description of God.]

1.      [Transgression, (Heb.) [pesha.] signifies the [passing over a boundary, doing what is prohibited.]2.      [Sin,] (Heb.) [chataah.] signifies the [missing of a mark,] not doing what was commanded; but it is often taken to express [sinfulness,] or sin in the nature, producing transgression in the life.3.      [“Sin” (NIV) Iniquity (KJV),] (Heb.) [avon.] signifies [what is turned out of its proper course or situation;] anything [morally distorted] or [perverted.  Iniquity,] what is contrary to [equity] or [justice.]4.      [Guile,] (Heb.) [remiyah.] signifies [fraud, deceit, guile, etc.]

To remove these evils, [three] acts are mentioned: [forgiving, covering,] and [not imputing.]

1.     TRANSGRESSION, (Heb.) [pesha,] must be forgiven, (Heb.) [nesui,] borne away, [i.e.,] by a vicarious sacrifice; for [bearing sin,] or [bearing away sin,] always implies this.  2.     SIN, (Heb.) [chataah,] must be [covered,] (Heb.) [kesui,] hidden from the sight.  It is odious and abominable, and must be put out of sight.  3.     INIQUITY, (Heb.) [avon,] what is [perverse] or [distorted,] must not be imputed, (Heb.) [lo yachshobh,] must [not be reckoned to his account.]  4.     GUILE, (Heb.) [remiyah,] must be annihilated from the soul.  [In whose spirit there is no] GUILE.

Forgiveness is no sham, and the peace which it brings is not caused by playing tricks with conscience.

Micah 7:19 You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. (NIV) Not like a cork - but a stone. [Illus. Raggedy clothes]

2- The Silent Man.  (3-4)

·     "I kept silence," not merely I was silent, "I [kept] silence," resolutely, perseveringly·     Who is blessed?  Not he who cloaks, conceals, confesses not his sin.  [David was miserable!!!!]

Prov 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.  (NIV)

·     David here not only mourns for sin as a man, but he roars, as it were, like a pained beast

3- The Confessing Man.  (5)

Finally accepting the true source of his problem, he confessed his sin

4- The Godly Man. (6-7) [changed!!!]

·     The same man who in verse 4 was oppressed by the presence of God, here finds a shelter in him.  ·     Beneath the hollow of that hand which was once so heavy upon me, I can now repose.  ·     The gospel of substitution makes God, who otherwise would have been our judge. our refuge.·     Observe the three tenses, the sorrowful past, the joyful present, this a cheerful future.

Instruction To The Hearer Of The Psalm. (8-11)

·     God Himself says, ["I will instruct thee," "I will teach thee," "I will guide thee,"]·     Consider the why a broken leg is incurable in a horse, and easily curable in a man.  [understanding]

CONCLUSION:

·     Does your soul cry out - I must have the forgiveness of God.·     There is, however, a set time for prayer, beyond which it will be unavailing; but once the sentence has gone forth pleading will be useless, for the Lord will not be found.

·     Suppose a traveler upon a bleak and exposed heath to be alarmed by the approach of a storm.  He looks out for shelter.  But if his eye discern a place to hide him from the storm, does he stand still and say, "I see there [is] a shelter, and therefore I may remain where I am"?  Does he not betake himself to it?  Does he not run, in order to escape the stormy wind and tempest?  It was a "hiding-place" before; but it was [his] hiding-place only when he ran into it, and was safe.  Had he not gone into it, though it might have been a protection to a thousand other travelers who resorted there, to him it would have been as if no such place existed. C.H.S.

·     For he who promises pardon, does not promise to-morrow.

"You may ask, "What do I have to do?"

First: Admit your need ("I am a sinner").

Second: Be willing to turn from your sins (repent).

Third: Believe that Jesus Christ died for you on the cross and rose from the grave.

Fourth: Though prayer, invite Jesus Christ to come in and control your life (receive Him as Savior and Lord)."

Believer - ["Be glad."]  Happiness is not only our privilege, but our duty. Truly we serve a generous God, since he makes it a part of our obedience to be joyful.  How sinful are our rebellious murmurings!!!
